Two Point Hospital

Two Point Hospital

Curious how we evaluate games for busy parents? Read everything about our methodology in the How We Rate Games: Pause & Play Stats guide.

If you grew up playing Bullfrog’s classic Theme Hospital, Two Point Hospital is the modern spiritual successor you have been waiting for. It brings back all the nostalgic vibes and absurd humor. Discovering new illnesses is a joy, from patients suffering from "Rockstar" to the hilarious "Lightheadedness" (a brilliant nod to the giant balloon-heads you had to pop in the original game). I put around 50 hours into the campaign and some sandbox modes, and while it can get slightly repetitive, it is a management gem.

The Pause & Play Stats

1. Pause & Play Flexibility: 5/5

The absolute savior of this game. You can manually save whenever you want, and you can freeze time completely at any moment. If your hospital is suddenly overflowing with emergency patients, or your baby just woke up crying, you simply hit freeze, deal with the crisis, and return without any penalty.

2. Pick-Up & Play Factor: 4/5

You do not miss any story elements if you take a break, but you do lose a bit of your management rhythm. Jumping back into a massive hospital after a week away means you might forget your grand expansion plans or struggle to remember which specific bizarre illness required which specific bizarre treatment room.

3. Energy Level: 2/5

Highly relaxing. The intense micromanagement usually only happens at the crucial start of a new level. Once you optimize your infrastructure and get past that initial hump, you can basically steamroll the rest of the level, sitting back and watching the chaos unfold profitably.

4. Silent Playability: 4/5

The hospital announcements are witty and fun, but more importantly, there are audio cues (like sirens or alerts) when a timed emergency or VIP visit occurs. If you are playing while the baby sleeps, I highly recommend keeping at least one earbud in so you do not miss a critical alert.

5. Contact Nap Factor: 2/5

Here is the catch. I played this on the PS5, and rotating, selecting, and navigating a complex sim with a controller while holding a baby is incredibly frustrating. However, if you play this on a laptop with a touchpad or mouse, and you prepare your setup before you sit down with the baby, it becomes highly playable with one hand.

The Verdict:

Two Point Hospital is a brilliant, funny management sim that respects a parent's time by letting you freeze the action instantly. However, just like other 'god-mode' simulators (Cities: Skylines, Planet Zoo, Dungeons or The Sims), navigating menus is infinitely better with a mouse than a controller. Avoid the console versions if you plan to play with a baby on your lap, and stick to a laptop (or similar) setup instead.
